Poster Comment: This is the same storm that fried my telephone. BTW, Chicago has now had as much rain so far this summer as we got all last summer. West of here, heading into Iowa, it's even worse. Flooding everywhere.

That happens on the peaks along the divide here. The ones above the tree line. Thunderstorms come over every afternoon in the summer and every year a bunch of people get killed by lightning. They think they can hide in a cave or in a large crack in the rocks, but this just gets them killed.

An ranger explained to me that a lot of the peaks are really just one big rock, and it's conductive. It has a lot of iron and other conductive minerals in it. The ranger said that the lighting doesn't pop up from one point like it does in the mid west. Basically the whole peak lights up so it doesn't matter if your in a cave or not.

I've seen this happen. Five or six visible bolts come off the peak and a bright glow as well, which must be many more smaller bolts.

When it starts getting dark, you run for the tree line and get under the trees. There the rock is insulated by a couple of feet of non-conductive dirt and pine needles.
