"George Washington's Vision"

This afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of her presence. A second, a third and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes.

By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless, as though it had become paralyzed.

A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed as if it had become filled with sensations, and luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; all were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

Presently I heard a voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn,' while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly, I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a stranger scene. Before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world — Europe, Asia, Africa and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific.

"Son of the Republic," said the same mysterious voice as before, "look and learn." At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel, standing or rather floating in mid-air, between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand, he sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while with his left hand he cast some on Europe. Immediately a cloud raised from these countries, and joined in mid-ocean. For a while it remained stationary, and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through it at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American people.

A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean, and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows in sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, "Son of the Republic, look and learn," I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them.

Again, I heard the mysterious voice say, "Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn." At this the dark shadowy angel turned his face southward, and from Africa I saw an ill omened specter approach our land. It flitted slowly over every town and city of the latter. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other. As I continued looking I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light, on which was traced the word "Union," bearing the American flag which he placed between the divided nation, and said, "Remember ye are brethren." Instantly, the inhabitants, casting from them their weapons became friends once more, and united around the National Standard.

"And again I heard the mysterious voice saying "Son of the Republic, look and learn." At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: From each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America. Our country was enveloped in this volume of cloud, and I saw these vast armies devastate the whole county and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of sword, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, "Son of the Republic, look and learn" When the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast. "Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shone the word Union, and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were will nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle.

Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, "Son of the Republic, look and learn." As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious!

Then once more I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice: "While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last." And taking from his brow the crown on which blazoned the word "Union," he placed it upon the Standard while the people, kneeling down, said, "Amen."

The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld. This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, "Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, but in this greatest conflict the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land and the Union." With these words the vision vanished, and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown to me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States.

Washington's Vision

In the National Tribune, 1880, an article appeared giving an account of the "Vision of Washington" at Valley Forge. The account was told by a gentleman named Anthony Sherman, who supposedly was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78. The story has been published several times.

Some people will say that it is substantiated by the fact that a copy of the account is in the Library of Congress. This argument of authenticity is misleading in and of itself. The Library of Congress has copies of anything published. That does not indicate accuracy of the content.

I am unaware of any eighteenth-century evidence that corroborates this story. The soldier mentioned as having a first-hand account of the "Vision," Anthony Sherman, was a soldier in the Continental Army. However, according to his pension application, written by him, he states that he was at Saratoga under the command of Benedict Arnold at the end of 1777 and only joined the main forces in 1778 in New Jersey just before the Battle of Monmouth.

Anthony Sherman wrote:

You doubtless heard the story of Washington's going to the thicket to pray in secret for aid and comfort from God, the interposition of whose Divine Providence brought us safely through the darkest days of tribulation. One day, I remember it well, when the chilly winds whistled through the leafless trees, though the sky was cloudless and the sun shown brightly, he remained in his quarters nearly all the afternoon alone. When he came out, I noticed that his face was a shade paler than usual. There seemed to be something on his mind of more than ordinary importance. Returning just after dusk, he dispatched an orderly to the quarters who was presently in attendance. After a preliminary conversation of about an hour, Washington, gazing upon his companion with that strange look of dignity which he alone commanded, related the event that occurred that day.

This is but one of several versions I've read. But all the versions mention 3 military conflicts on our soil. 1 being the revolution. 2 being the civil war and 3 being the big invasion where the rest of the world sends armies to america. and all the versions say we'll be successful in the revolution, that after the civil war we'll become united quickly and that we'll prevail in the 3'rd conflict too after divine intervention on our side.

But this version you posted differs from the others I've seen in a big respect. In the others he gave a speech in the morning and said the visitation from the angel occurred at night. In this version he records the visitation late in the afternoon after it had allegedly just occurred.

but this symbolism of the angel dipping the hand into the ocean and dumping it out in various places to create a cloud is common also to different versions. I think unquestionably Washington experienced something. He also told this story of the angel visiting him to many people in his life after they normally asked him about it.

The version I read on FreeRepublic about 9 years ago I cannot find on the internet now though I've searched a lot for it. Its not on the FR either. I found a FR link of it with my comment on it, but I think the article was changed out because it was not the same. Thats what I think at least.

There's 1 big difference I notice between the version I read a long time ago and the versions on the internet now. In the version I read it said that jesus returned during this horrible onslaught of foreign armies in our country. and that he raised from the ground many Americans that were called 'white spirits'. There is a bible verse that says jesus will raise grey spirits from the ground when he returns and use them for his purposes. But the version I read on FR said he'd raise white spirits from the ground in America and that these would fight on our side turning the tide of this last war. The version also said that it would appear as though all were lost for our side, but that our surviving people would close ranks heroically and fight on anyway - prior to Jesus' return which would turn the tide.

In this version you posted and on others I've seen it says that either these 'white spirits' would descend from heaven or that jesus would descend from heaven with an army to protect us. That's a very important distinction. Does this happen where people descend and help us or does it happen where they are raised from the dead. The reason it is an important distinction is because the bible describes jesus raising the dead from the ground after he returns, and as I said using some of these people for his purposes - to build the kingdom of heaven on earth.

Recently I posted a link to this Jordan Maxwell home page. On that page there is information speaking against the idea that a kingdom of heaven will be built on earth. But this idea that a kingdom of heaven will one day be built on the earth by jesus is common in the bible. It is in the old testament and the new testament. It is even in the lord's prayer which was spoken by jesus. So I think that this kingdom of heaven will be built here on earth when jesus returns. But the evil ones who rule are pretending that they are god and pretending that they are building this kingdom of heaven. and they are enlisting some of the christians to believe in what they are doing. They may one day use deception to get them to believe that jesus returned and is part of their political movement imposing their new world order.

Some might logically think that George Washington was under the influence of this evil group and that his vision was a fabrication for their purpose. I myself don't think that. I do think that they've gone to great lengths to twist his vision and hide key details.

The other thing I remember about the version I read 9 years ago was that it was definitely a speech given by Washington in the morning after he said it happened in the night. He did use the phrase 'son of the republic - listen & learn'. He used the symbol of the water being sprinkled to create a mist and the mist like a cloud tumbling towards our country. and he also used repeatedly the phrase 'sons of liberty - rise up!!' as if to motivate the troops into battle. he used that phrase repeatedly after every part of the story. The term 'sons of liberty' was popular in the revolution to describe the revolutionary war soldiers and for generations afterward it was commonly used. He also did speak about a coast to coast expansion between the revolution and the civil war saying that there were many villages and much prosperity. and he spoke about at least 4 or 5 different times telling stories of Americans going to fight around the world even in every part of the world and always fighting victoriously. He repeated that about the foreign wars monotonously and made clear it was a burden to us.

and when he told the story to people at social occasions throughout his life after the war he frequently only mentioned the big 3 conflicts in our country and not the many foreign wars. He frequently told a very short version.

I think there's overwhelming evidence that both Washington and others tell these stories. There is just no clear transcript of what happened at all though. You can presume that Washington had a visitation from an angel. Or you can presume that Washington was crazy. Whichever you want.

But I tell you that the people who rule in this world today are trying to cover up what he really did say and discredit the idea that an angel came and told him things. Our country does have a special destiny.

I believe that our nation is the nation jesus spoke of in Matthew 21:43 when he ws speaking to some jewish leaders shortly before his sacrifice and told them that god would take their special blessings which they'd boasted of would be taken from them and given to another nation. Other chapters say this nation is far far away and a nation not yet made. That is our nation. We were the nation that showed the world that people could live with prosperity for the common person here on earth. We brought forth great fruit historically.

www.blueletterbible .org/kjv/Mat/Mat021.html#43

and I believe that Daniel chapter 11 speaks of our civil war in the war between the north & the south. and that the last great empire that rules the world springs from this conflict, but is eventually swept away. When it is swept away that is the abomination spoken of in Revelation, when Babylon of the end- times is destroyed very quickly when 10 lieutenant nations of Babylon turn on it. This 'abomination' of the bible is described in both Revelation & Daniel, it is a time when god's favorite nation is destroyed totally. But understand that this nation is under the captive of Babylon and it is considered a good thing to destroy Babylon which enslaves the world in an evil empire. This conflict Washington speaks of is that same conflict - the abomination - spoken of in Daniel and in Revelation when Babylon the great is destroyed so quickly.

So today we are occupied by this Babylon and we are not free in a sense as that evil empire rules us. Just like the hebrews in ancient Egypt. We've been given great blessings just like the hebrews of ancient times. But we've let god down just like the hebrews of ancient times. we're going to face great trouble as a result. but in the end god will rescue at least a remnant of us and build us up again. and there will be a core group of Americans who will be raised from the dead and help jesus to build this kingdom of heaven globally. but this will only happen after our country is completely destroyed. the world will marvel at how quickly and completely we were destroyed. and then they'll marvel further at how their armies are still defeated inside our country after this happens. That is when super-natural things will happen that the people of the world won't be able to ignore.

you know that when god gives out great blessings it is in a way a double-edged thing, if you fail to live up to them, then a curse comes your way. This happened to the ancient hebrews, it has happened to us. But god will always be loyal to his promises. We will have opportunity to humbly repent and change, and then god will again bless us.

But prior to that the New World Order will have its way on earth. The New World Order is in my mind synonymous with this Babylon of the end-time era. When you read about Babylon of the end-times era you find many parallels to today's New World Order. It controls the treasuries of the nations, it corrupts the leaders of the various nations through vices, it doles out drugs to the people of the world, it seduces the masses into evil, it makes things very hard on the poor, it facilitates massive imports from all over the world into the home of Babylon through means of a costly economy that can buy yet does not produce.

This is all just my crazy thinking. But there are many christian scholars who think the same based on their readings of the bible and historical events as well. George Washington's vision is but one element supporting this thinking. Note that the version you posted does not mention jesus' return. But the version I read on FR did say he descended in the midst of this great 3'rd battle on our soil. and it said Jesus raised from the dead many 'white ghosts' who fought on our side. The bible speaks of jesus returning during this great event called the abomination when babylon is destroyed and immediately raising from the dead many who would help him. and then later raising from the dead many more for the sake of judgement. and the version you posted (& others I read) said that these white ghosts who would help us came down from above. But the version I read on FR years ago said they were raised from the ground. So, on this point there is deception I feel, carefully done to conceal biblical interpretations that the Babylon people don't want us to have.

The evil ones are allowed to rule on this earth because we don't believe in god or follow his ways. and through this process 2 things will happen. We will learn to treat god as god and we will be given a clear choice each individual person on the whole earth will be given a very clear choice between what god calls life or death. we choose. and when judgement comes god tells us what choice we made. and things must be arranged so that every single person worldwide can have a maximum chance at that choice. That is why these evil ones are allowed to rule as they are and the delusions have come to our people to make them so blind - to let this drama be played out.

when they finally work up the nerve to come and attack us and kill us to get rid of what they see as an evil monster (our country) in this world - they will soon realize that they accomplished nothing even though their military attack was awesomely successfuly in its early stages. They will be driven out of our country with defeat. and then they'll find the world is far far worse off without us than with us. and they will suffer. at that time the whole world will know it has a clear choice to cry out for god or not. and then judgement will happen. as a result of judgement the people will be systematically separated. and then the world's problems will be systematically solved with jesus' leadership & inspiration. The earth that by then will have been made unable to support life will be restored. Our country that had been badly poisoned by the attack will be restored. We will be able to live in peace with no fear, with no love of money. and people will know that god is god and put him in his rightful place. Those who decide not to accept god will simply be excluded and put elsewhere.

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. (Charles Beard, American Historian)

I believe this portrait is commonly thought to be of a scene where Washington went into the woods at Valley Forge in December 1777 to pray. and it was in December 1777 when he had this vision. and it was December 26, 1777 that they attacked the Germans at Trenton, NJ from their base at Valley Forge. At that battle 1700 men captured 3000 and took all their supplies though the 1700 men had only enough gunpowder to fire 50 balls. Can you imagine an army of 1700 attacking an army of 3000 where the 1700 were armed only with long bayonnets on their rifles except for but 5 men who were given all the gunpowder they had? that is what they did and they prevailed spectacularly.

It helped that the Germans drank beer all day on December 25'th and the Americans attacked at 6 AM on December 26'th. The Germans saw all those bayonnets and saw that a few of their leaders were shot dead and surrendered.

and as I said on the other thread these events occurred when there was no logical rational reason to think the Americans had any chance to win the war. The British had 30,000 well armed well paid troops occupying the cities. In the previous 8 months they'd kicked the Americans out of the cities and decimated the Americans in battle after battle. The American army dwindled to just a few thousand and was not getting paid, did not have any money for supplies - and was only engaged in either hiding or being inactive completely.

Of those 3,000 Hessian mercenaries captured at Trenton about half of them stayed and became Americans after the war and the other half went home to Germany. But they were Europe's finest soldiers and defeated by these starving Americans who had the ability to fire only 50 balls.

here's another interesting controversy - I remember reading a historian who said it was well-documented that Washington actually rode his horse into the boat that crossed the Delaware. These were small boats, his horse stepped into the boat while washington was on it and washington stayed on the horse all the way across the river. and not only that men were standing right next to the horse pressed up against it. This story was widely reported because a horse is normally not able to do things like that. You normally have to cover their eyes and lead them without sitting on them to get them in a boat like that. The other officers who took horses did that. But everyone was amazed that Washington stepped his horse right into the boat without this. and that was a legend throughout American history. I remember seeing portraits of Washington doing that. Today the stories on the internet and the portraits are different and tell the story differently. It just makes me wonder about these things. I read an historian who wrote a book about Washington in the mid 1990's who told the story one way and now it is told differently. And I remember seeing the portraits in books with Washington on the horse in the boat crossing the river. Now those portraits aren't shown.

could the people who rule us now be aware of divine intervention on our side at that time and want to hide it from us?

Washington was a great leader. there are many stories of him. He was said to be an extraordinary athlete. He was thought of as the best horseman in the colonies. He could control his horses amazingly well compared to others. He was a great leader. In the French-Indian war of 1750 he was a great leader in battle said to be the #1 soldier on the British side. He never fathered children. His wife had children by a previous marriage, but not in his marriage. There's no record of him having a sexual affair with a woman. Yet women liked him a lot. and he passionately expressed his admiration for particular female friends in letters. when he was about 20 he plainly told a neighbor lady he loved her in a letter (& she was married). and then he was said to be the father of our nation.

and then there are events in the civil war as well that indicate the hand of god has definitely been involved in our nation's history. I read in some history source as follows - in the very first battle of the civil war where a big northern army came up against a big southern army both sides just faced each other for a while without shooting, and then the north shot a cannonball. This was not when the south shot cannons from Fort Sumpter at northern ships, that was not a time when the north actually sent an army to the south to face the south, that was a few hot-heads shooting a cannon. But when the first real battle happened with a northern army facing a southern army both raised with the intentions of facing the other, the north fired the first cannonball. and it hit the top of a chimney of a lady's house who was living there by herself. Her husband had died. She lived on a farm, the battle was taking place on her farm. The southern troops were all around her outside. and she sat in the house knitting and drinking tea. She was aware the soldiers were outside, but she couldn't do anything about it. So she just sat in her rocking chair and knitted. The cannon ball went into the top of her chimney and came down the chimney, then it rolled onto the floor up to her feet and did not explode. That was the first shot fired in a real battle. Then at the end of the war when Lee's army was retreating around Virginia and Grant's army was chasing them, eventually the southerners had to surrender. and they did. And Lee arranged to meet Grant at a house for a talk. The house they met in was the same house where the first cannonball had landed at the lady's feet. The lady served them both tea and sat in the rocking chair while the 2 generals sat at her table and talked.

and that is something I read in a serious historical source. If that is not the hand of god, then I don't know what is.

our country has a special destiny. we need to learn though that it is not for our purposes that our destiny occurs, it is for god's purposes. also, the Americans who have pride in the things our government does today such as torture and killing and hurting the poor, etc., are not going to be included in this kingdom of heaven that is coming. as you know pride goeth before the fall and a haughty spirit before destruction. despite this special destiny of our nation, pride should not be our friend, humility instead.

we can also have confidence in the verses that tell us that when this day of judgement occurs and jesus is here actually leading his people, the evil ones who've done these horrible things that perplex us now will be dealt with. There are particular verses describing that they be thrown into a fiery pit, etc. And as I said on the other thread, there is a bible verse that says 'if god is with us, then who can stand against us'.

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. (Charles Beard, American Historian)

there are many internet pages that talk about this. Another thing I noticed is that some versions list this 'red light'. That is in the version you posted. The red light is associated with the force that attacks us in the 3'rd war on our soil. and some interpret this to be a communist force. This red light wasn't in the version I first read on Free Republic 9 years ago. This Anthony Sherman version is now prominent, but I tell you it is not the same one I read. also, the document I read a long time ago quoted a newspaper article published a few weeks after the event, it quoted about 2 sentences noting that Washington had a prophecy speech. I see that Snopes says the whole prophecy speech thing is a false rumor.

This appears to be Civil War twaddle.

http://www.investigativehistorian.com/Washingtons_Vision.html

Washington's Vision

Washington’s Vision was the title of a short story written and published by Charles W. Alexander under the pseudonym Wesley Bradshaw during the Civil War. He originally published it in April 1861 and then again in October 1864. For all purposes, Wesley Bradshaw will be referred to by his real name Charles W. Alexander or just his last name. In this story, Alexander claims to have met an old Revolutionary War soldier by the name of Anthony Sherman outside of Independence Hall on July 4, 1859. Alexander further claims that Sherman told him of an incident at Valley Forge where George Washington was visited by a "singularly beautiful female" spiritual being who was not specifically identified. This being showed George Washington the future destiny of America. According to the vision in the story, America would face three "perils" in the future. The first peril was the Revolutionary War, and the second peril was the Civil War. The third peril involves the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa combining together in a land and sea invasion of America. It is the third peril that has attracted such widespread attention over the 147+ years that Washington’s Vision has been in continuous publication in one format or another.

The most common issue surrounding Washington’s Vision is whether it is a true story or just a figment of Alexander’s imagination. The common claim by skeptics is that anyone can predict events after they have happened. As it concerns Washington’s Vision, this is based on incorrect information due to a common misunderstanding. The most commonly held belief about Washington’s Vision is that it was first published in the December 1880 issue of the "National Tribune" newspaper for military veterans. That is incorrect. The December 1880 issue of the "National Tribune" contained a reprint of Washington’s Vision, but it was not the original publication. Washington’s Vision was first published in Philadelphia in April 1861 around the time the Civil War began. The "National Tribune" connection arises because Alexander was a newspaper reporter for many years, but he never worked for the "National Tribune" published in Washington, D.C. nor did he ever live in Washington, D.C.

There are other problems with the story. The biggest problem is that there is no primary evidence from George Washington himself to support the validity of the story. He did not keep a diary or journal during most of the Revolutionary War. He is not known to have written anything down regarding his alleged vision. The only source of the story was Alexander who claimed that he heard it from Anthony Sherman. Contrary to what many believe, there was a Revolutionary War soldier by the name of Anthony Sherman. Not only did he serve in the war, but he lived well into the 19th century. Whether he was alive in 1859 or not is another matter. Additionally, it is difficult to verify if the Anthony Sherman who fought in the Revolutionary War was the same one that Alexander claimed to have met.

Probably one of the most intriguing questions surrounding Washington’s Vision is why it was first published in 1861. After all, it allegedly took place at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78, so what took so long to get it published? The answer is a complex one, and you’ll just have to read the book to find out. Bookmark this website for future updates on the status of the book.

It comes to the same conclusion, but is a bit more detailed and includes a link to the original pamphlet online.

I felt the very notion of God cheering for "The Union" to be a bit odd.

Perhaps this is why:

In its expression of the theme that America can never be conquered by external enemies, but can only be brought down through the failings of its own citizens, this piece is reminiscent of thoughts delivered for real by a revered American historical figure: Abraham Lincoln's address before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, on 27 January 1838:

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the Ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

The only other hit in the library of congress for a vision from Washington is this:

Badger, William Whittlesey. Washington, or, A vision of liberty: a poem delivered before the Genesee Lyceum, at Lima, N.Y., on the occasion of their annual celebration of Washington's birthday, February 22, 1855. Lima,N.Y. S.M. Raymond Gazette Office. 1855 24 p.; 21 cm. Reel: 11, No. 169

I can't see the text, however.
